The Anton
Anderson Memorial Tunnel has shortened travel time from Anchorage,
Alaska's major population center to Whittier, a small town on Prince
William Sound. Prior to the tunnel opening, people traveling to
Whittier had to queue up in a large parking lot at the end of Turnagain
arm in order to load their vehicles onto flatbed rail cars. In the
early 1990's we stayed in our car, which we had driven onto a Alaska
Railroad rail car for the slow train ride through the tunnels to
Whittier. Driving through the tunnel now takes only a fraction of
the time it took to "take the train."
