Winter buds have two or more scales exposed. They are usually resinous or sticky, shiny, brown, long and pointed. The lowest bud-scale is centered over a leaf-scar.

• Winter buds 6 millimeters or less in length, and slightly or not resinous.

• Winter buds 10-25 millimeters long and very resinous.
