Winter buds are not resinous or sticky. The lowest bud scale is at the side of the bud.

• Winter buds often have short stalks on older twigs but are without stalks on younger twigs.

• The 3 exposed bud scales meet at the edges.

• Often the last summer's old, hard and blackish cones are present.
